Group Opportunities
In addition to working individually with students the AEC is again offering several psycho-educational groups that may be valuable to students especially as they are transitioning into the university. This year they include:
Advanced ADHD Group is a weekly group for sophomore, junior, or seniors who have ADHD-related challenges. The group is designed to improve students’ college experience (both academic and personal) by providing specific knowledge, unique strategies, and peer connection. Topics include:
- Overcoming procrastination and avoidance coping
- Using technology to improve time management and study skills
- Mindfulness meditation as attention training
- Exercise, nutrition, and the ADHD brain
- Conquering perfectionism
- Utilizing the many strengths associated with ADHD
This group is open to all AEC registered students who are at least at the sophomore level. For more information contact Courtney Jellar at (541) 346-1155 or cjellar@uoregon.edu.
Social Connections Group is an educational/social group offered through the Accessible Education Center for students who are interested in improving social skills, connecting with other students, and finding community on campus. Initially this group was created for students with Asperger's Syndrome. For more information or if you are interested in joining Social Connectedness, please contact Audrey Medina at (541) 346-1071 or medina@uoregon.edu.
Young Adult Cancer Survivor Support Group for 18-40 year old cancer survivors in or post-treatment. Connect with other young adult cancer survivors and bond over survivor stories. This group is open to the Eugene community and meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month (April and May, 2012) at the Spencer View Community Room. For more information contact Audrey Medina at (541) 346-1071 or medina@uoregon.edu.
Disabilities Advisory Subcommittee
The University of Oregon Emergency Management program (UOEM) is working hard to improve its emergency planning, response, and recovery plans and invites you to join a new Disabilities Advisory Subcommittee (DAS) aimed at meeting this goal.
This group is a subcommittee of the Emergency Management Advisory Committee (EMAC), which is responsible for oversight and guidance including the development and implementation of all emergency management plans on campus. UOEM will convene faculty, students, and staff with disabilities and their allies twice a year to identify and discuss issues and concerns related to emergency planning and response, including things such as how to prepare for emergencies, how to provide support during evacuations, how to incorporate people with disabilities in drills, how to make emergency communications more accessible, how to ensure that the campus is prepared to provide emergency shelter, and how to provide specialized support after an event. The DAS will also provide ideas and feedback to UOEM regarding its current campus-wide emergency plans, annexes, and related policies.
If you are interested in being on the DAS, please respond to Hilary at hgerdes@uoregon.edu.
