Converting printed pages, sounds, videos etc. into digital formats allows them to be transformed into information that may be formatted in various ways depending upon the needs of the consumer. This can then be replayed on computers or any of the growing number of mobile devices. Increasingly technology is being designed with more consideration of the variation of human abilities.
The Adaptive Technology Center
The Adaptive Technology Center (ATC) is an important part of The Accessible Education Center and provides direct support to students when there are barriers to technology access or usability. The need to utilize the ATC is determined as part of the services and accommodations discussed during your meeting with AEC. The ATC works with students who need to use assistive technologies, such as screen readers (text to speech), and voice recognition programs (speech to text). When appropriate, students will be referred for an orientation on the relevant technology and procedures. The ATC is available as a resource to faculty and students with questions about inclusive design of course related materials, and relevant assistive technologies. The ATC also offers consulting and workshops for the university community on various aspects of creating universally designed digital materials. Support is available to assist faculty/staff in producing accessible digital content that works in various display/playback environments. Topics include:
- Making accessible PDF syllabi and other documents from Word
- Making accessible PDF documents from scanned documents
- Strategies for accessible web design
- Creating universal text handouts from PowerPoint
