Support and Accommodations
Winter 2012
Thank you for submitting your exam requests early!
To request and arrange for exam accommodations, students must be on file with the Accessible Education Center. Once an adviser in AEC has determined your suitable accommodations, submit an online exam accommodation request form a minimum of 5 business days before the exam date.
Exam Accommodation Steps:
- Meet with instructor to determine if the in-class exam conditions will be suitable.
- If the in-class exam conditions will not be suitable, ask instructor if she or he can make alternative arrangements.
- If instructor is unable to make other exam arrangements, submit an electronic scheduling request to the Accessible Education Center. Before submitting, you must confirm the following details with your instructor for each exam:
- exam date
- exam time
- method of exam delivery and return
- use of materials
- Submit one electronic request form per exam.
- After the electronic request is submitted, the Accessible Education Center will review the information and send a confirmation e-mail to you and your instructor verifying exam arrangements.
Please note the importance of submitting your requests as early as possible! We will not be able to respond to exam accommodation requests submitted less than 5 business days prior to the exam date.
Please note that the deadline for submitting final exam requests for Winter 2012 is March 2, 2012.
Note Taking Support
Students may have difficulty taking their own notes for a variety of reasons. Many students now find that using a digital recorder or smart pen (that records auditory material and copies a visual image of notes in sync together) are very effective and in many cases preferable to more traditional notetaking support. Many faculty also now post their notes online for all students, or if available for students registered with the AEC. In cases where the available technology and resources are not effective or desired, we do have a student volunteer notetaker program. When this is needed, student volunteers provide email, typed, or handwritten notes. In selected cases, computer-based note taking is provided to allow for full participation. Please discuss your specific notetaking needs with your AEC adviser for the best solution to match your needs.Requesting a Note Taker
If you find that instructor notes, or recording visual and auditory versions of lectures are not effective, and you would like to use a student notetaker there are a few steps. First be sure that you've been authorized for this support, and you have discussed your range of options. If you do not know anyone in the class who you would like to be your notetaker, you can send your instructor an automated request for assistance with identifying an interested student. This initiates a request to have your instructor assist with identifying a volunteer. Any difficulties with identifying a notetaker should be reported immediately to AEC so we can assist. Students who want to utilize support and services offered by the Accessible Education Center need to:- Schedule an appointment with an AEC adviser by phone (541) 346-1155, email uoaec@uoregon.edu, or by visiting our office in 164 Oregon Hall.
- Bring in documentation of disability or paperwork that addresses past or anticipated challenges that might arise in a competitive academic setting. If you don't have any current documentation we still encourage you to meet with us to discuss your situation and possible options for further assessment.
- At your initial appointment the advisor will ask you about your educational history, and if relevant, medical history, current concerns, and challenges you may have experienced, as well as areas that you anticipate needing support with. Your test scores, and/or medical records, will be discussed in addition to your needs and concerns. After there is adequate information there will be a mutual discussion regarding approved "reasonable accommodations."
- It is your responsibility to follow up with AEC staff as questions or concerns arise about services, procedures, timelines, or responsibilities.
Student Concerns or Disputes
There are several options for students to resolve disability-related concerns, complaints or issues.Students with disabilities should first discuss their situation with an AEC adviser. Most disability-related issues or complaints about accommodations, services, faculty, other campus departments, programs or facilities are generally resolved at this level. The student may also meet with the Director of the Accessible Education Center for resolution by scheduling an appointment. If concerns are not resolved to mutual satisfaction, students may file an informal or formal grievance with the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity.
The ADA Coordinator is responsible for campus compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. The UO ADA Coordinator is Penny Daugherty in the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity, (541) 346-3123.
