The Accessible Education Center is proud to recognize Dr. Paul Dalton, Professor of Bioengineering, as the recipient of the 2026 Faculty Excellence in Universal Design Award.
This award honors faculty members who demonstrate exceptional commitment to creating inclusive learning environments where all students have equitable opportunities to learn and succeed. Through innovative teaching practices, flexible course design, and a deep commitment to accessibility, Paul Dalton exemplifies the principles of Universal Design for Learning.
Dr. Dalton creates multiple pathways for students to engage with course content through captioned videos, demonstrations, intentional readings, lectures, interactive activities, and hands-on learning experiences. Course materials are provided in advance, software is selected with accessibility and affordability in mind, and clear written instructions help students navigate course expectations and technology.
Students describe his courses as engaging, flexible, and empowering. He begins each class with real-world examples that connect course concepts to meaningful applications and spark curiosity. Assignments are intentionally designed with minimal restrictions, encouraging creativity, autonomy, and self-expression while still meeting learning objectives. In his Advanced 3D Printing course, students are encouraged to experiment, take risks, and learn from failure without fear of penalty, creating an environment that supports both growth and innovation.
Dr. Dalton is also responsive to student needs. He actively seeks feedback, adapts courses when appropriate, and recognizes that different students require different supports to thrive. His approach balances accessibility with academic rigor, creating opportunities for all students to succeed.
